A Beginner’s Guide to Planning Your First Automation Project

Your first automation project does not have to be complicated. With a clear plan and a realistic scope, it can deliver visible results quickly and build confidence for larger projects.

Step 1: Map your current process

Write down each step of the process as it works today: who does what, with which tools, and how long it takes. You cannot improve what you have not described.

Step 2: Choose the right process

The best first candidates are frequent, repetitive and based on clear rules. Avoid processes that depend heavily on judgment or that change constantly.

Step 3: Define what success looks like

Decide in advance how you will measure the result, for example hours saved per week, fewer errors or faster response times. This keeps the project focused and makes the result easy to explain.

Step 4: Start small and test

Launch a small version first, with real data but limited scope. Test it, gather feedback from the people who use it and fix what does not work before expanding.

Step 5: Train your team and monitor

People need to know how the new process works and when to step in. After launch, keep monitoring the system so that problems are detected early and improvements can be made.
